VOUS MOURREZ TOUTES à 15 ANS
2022

“You all die at the age of fifteen,” Diderot wrote to Sophie Volland. Ambitious, full of hope but passive, this rebellious girl will quickly settle down, ready to consent to her life as a woman. She thus buries her childhood, the autonomous and imperious child she was; she enters with submission into adult existence. She quickly understood that she had to adhere to a number of rules and injunctions. Her sex took over. The sexual category as it is posed by society “forms the mind as much as the body since it controls all mental production. It possesses our minds in such a way that we cannot think outside of it” (cf. Monique Wittig). This installation is composed of 20 vases filled with water, all possessing a doll. Each vase is identified by a number, thus assigning to each doll an individual existence while belonging to a common group. Some are dressed, styled and makeup embracing stereotypes related to the feminine, others are pregnant, destined for a maternal future. The dolls play as substitutes, and the installation offers perspectives of reading where it is a question of formatting and reification of the bodies, even of negation of life as of the feminine singularity.
