The Remains of Kim Kardashian raise questions about the nature of beauty, bodily modification, and physical decay in our contemporary society. The idea stems from a question: if another species were to discover our remains, enriched with artificial materials such as silicone, what would it think of our aesthetic norms and our quest for immortality? What conclusions would it draw about our values and priorities? How would it interpret our bodily practices? As a major figure of self-transformation, Kim Kardashian embodies the most well-known example of bodily treatments that have become mainstream. In her case, beauty survives the body: silicone integrated beneath the skin surpasses organic matter and becomes the relic of a synthetic beauty of the past. She will die with what constitutes her beauty — and what, paradoxically, will outlive her. The inorganic integrates itself into the body in order to survive beyond it. Thus, the slower decay of chemically modified bodies reveals a profound alteration in our relationship to life, death, and beauty, but also in the imprint our bodies leave on the soil. My exploration invites reflection on how our aesthetic choices shape our understanding of identity, mortality, and society. The artifice surpasses us and outlives us, leaving others to interpret what our humanity once was.
